Biking in Houston

Today we’re heading over to the city of Houston, Texas which isn’t considered to be the most biking friendly city in the county. Bicycle-related injuries tend to be a little more common than they should be, but the city has made strong efforts to improve biking trails along the bayous, with White Oak Bayou Trail being one example.

Houston’s trails are, however, not the best for getting around to bike lanes or major city streets, but the newly announced Houston Bike Plan is intended to address this situation by adding important connections and hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. This plan is still in its early stages, so in the meantime bikers may want to try some of the biking alternatives below.

Heights Boulevard is the only roadway in the city where the bike lanes are wide enough to provide significant separation from larger vehicles. McKinney Street doesn’t have a bike lane, but it’s also not traveled on very frequently and it provides access to several places including the BBVA Compass Stadium. Washington Avenue is a great option for group bike rides, provided you’re okay with a shared bike lane. Navigation Boulevard has also become very popular for those looking to train or bike faster.
